The health and safety of the entire Ursuline community is of utmost importance to us. As a result, in light of Governor DeWine’s order to cancel school and or cancel/postpone large, indoor gatherings in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Ursuline will be closed for three weeks beginning Monday, March 16 through April 3. The Ursuline offices will remain open the week of March 16 from 8:00 until 3:00. Updates regarding schedules and other information will be posted using the Drund app, social media, and ursuline.com.

All Ursuline special events, including school field trips, elementary school events, and other special events listed below, have been cancelled through the end of the three week online school period. All athletic contests and practices have been suspended. At that time, we will be advised by The Office of Catholic Schools regarding April events. During this time, for the safety of our school community, we ask that nonessential visits to the school are limited.

Financial aid applications, both the Ursuline form and FACTS online application, are still due March 20.

Teachers are preparing online lessons and assignments for students to complete over the next three weeks, with the exception of art and physical education. Students should check Google Classroom and their student e-mail daily. Assignments will have a strict due date and students are expected to submit assignments according to the due date. Teachers remain available via Google Classroom and their diocese e-mail. The next three weeks is not an extended spring break. Students without home Internet access or a device should see an Ursuline administrator immediately. Ursuline is committed to helping support families who do not have internet connection at home.

3/15 Update 
Again, Ursuline is closed for three weeks with the exception of the Ursuline offices, which are open 8:00 until 3:00.

The Ursuline Food Pantry was made available to students on Friday. If a student was absent or missed the opportunity and needs food, they may stop in the Ursuline Main Office this week.

Students without a home computer or Internet access should contact the main office by Tuesday, March 17, 330-744-4563.

Many teachers have already sent out or passed out assignments. All teachers will have their first lesson and assignment posted via Google Classroom or e-mail by Tuesday afternoon, March 17. With the assignments, teachers will also post times when they will be available for immediate responses to student questions or concerns. Teachers will also be available in person for tutoring next week, a schedule will be send out Tuesday, March 17.

Sophomore Pen Pal books and senior research papers are due Monday, March 16 to the main office.

3/16 Update 
After further consultation with health officials and the Diocese of Youngstown, Ursuline will not offer in person tutoring at this time. Teachers remain available to students via Google Classroom and e-mail. Each teacher has established a specific time when the teacher will be available for immediate response to student questions and concerns. Every effort will be made to respond to questions at other times as quickly as possible. Students who need to make up exams should contact their teacher immediately.

The third quarter will end as planned on Friday, March 27. Assignments or assessments from this week and next week will be included in the third quarter grade, unless otherwise indicated by your teacher.

Seniors who need to submit scholarship applications or college admissions applications and supporting materials can drop off applications to the main office for Mrs. Kakavros this week from 8:00 to 3:00.

Ursuline’s Easter Break from April 10 through April 17 will continue as planned.

3/18 Update
If a student is having issues contacting a teacher or receiving assignments or lessons from teachers, please contact the school. By now, each teacher should have communicated their expectations for the week.

We have requested and received extensions for portfolio/artifact submissions for AP Research, AP Studio Art, and AP Computer Science Principles. Your AP teacher will keep you posted. Testing dates may be changed, depending on the length of the school closure.

The financial aid deadline is this Friday, March 20.

The main office remains open through Friday from 8:00 until 3:00.

Seniors who need assistance with college applications or scholarships, can email Mrs. Kakavros at uhsguidance@youngstowndiocese.org. Forms for Mrs. Kakavros can also be dropped off to the main office.

3/19 Update
Beginning Monday, March 23 the Ursuline offices will be open from 9:00 until 2:00.

The Financial Aid Deadline for the Diocesan scholarship has been extended until April 24. The Ursuline Financial Aid Deadline has also been extended to April 24. The Ursuline application can be mailed to Ursuline- 750 Wick Ave, Youngstown, OH 44505 or dropped off to the main office. The FACTS online application should be completed online and the supporting documents submitted through the FACTS website. 3/22 Update
-Offices Last Day- Monday, March 23
Following the state’s order, Ursuline’s offices will close at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow until further notice. Please turn in tuition payments, sign Ed Choice checks, or drop off Ed Choice and financial aid paper work tomorrow between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm.

-Food Help
Food will be available for pick up at Ursuline Monday, March 23 from 9:00 until 2:00 for those in need.

-Schedule Requests for 2020-2021
Incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors were mailed a copy of their schedule requests for the 2020-2021 school year. If there is a mistake or a change needs to be made, e-mail Mr. Sammartino, ursulinehigh@youngstowndiocese.org. Please be specific about the courses that need to be dropped and/or added.

-Senior Graduation Requirements
The governor has requested that the legislature suspend all required Ohio testing for the year. This change may not impact those seniors who are working on a Capstone Project. Please continue to work on your project in order to be eligible for graduation. The Capstone Project only applies to seniors who have not passed all sections of the Iowa Exams.

The senior research paper was due Monday, March 16. It remains a graduation requirement. If you did not turn in your binder, turn it in Monday or email Mrs. Scudier.

-Quarter 3
Friday is the last day of Quarter 3.

Teachers will continue to send assignments and videos through Google Classroom and email.

Families should have received in the mail a copy of the schedule requests for the 2020-2021 school year. The list of courses are the selections made by the student with the help of the student’s guidance counselor. Please review the requests and if there is an error, email ursulinehigh@youngstowndiocese.org. This is not the student’s schedule for 2020-2021.

Ed Choice Update- Earlier today the Ohio General Assembly changed eligibility for Ohio’s EdChoice Scholarship Program for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. The changes, part of a larger legislative package designed to address the current COVID-19 crisis, freezes the list of eligible school buildings at the 2019-20 level of 517 schools.

EdChoice eligible students include:
– A student receiving a scholarship during 2019-20 school year can renew their scholarship.
– A sibling of a student that had a scholarship during 2019-20 (changes include a clarified definition of siblings includes foster, kinship care, guardianship) can now apply.
– A student who is enrolled in, or would be enrolled in, a school building that satisfied the conditions for eligibility for performance-based scholarships in the 2019-2020 school year, and was enrolled in a public or nonpublic school in any of grades K-12 or was homeschooled for the equivalent of those grades in the 2019-2020 school year.
– A student who was eligible for a scholarship for the 2019-20 school year, regardless of whether the student received a scholarship, remains eligible for the 2020-2021 school year.
The application window for the EdChoice Scholarship Program begins April 1. You can drop off your Ed Choice application or renewal application with a copy of a current utility bill with the same service and billing address that matches the address on your application and a copy of the student’s birth certificate to the main office Monday from 9:00 until 2:00. There will be a drop off box at the 10North entrance. Secretaries and administrators will not be available Monday, but you can call or email.

3/30 Update
Following Governor DeWine’s announcement, Ursuline will remain closed through Friday, May 1. Teachers will continue to deliver online instruction.

As a result of the continued school closure, we, unfortunately, have to postpone Prom and the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Notifications to NHS applicants will be mailed home before Easter Break. New dates for prom and the NHS Induction Ceremony will be selected when we know the date of our return to school. As of today, graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 have not changed.

Although the third quarter ended Friday, grades from teachers are not due until Thursday morning. Report cards should arrive at the end of next week.

A tentative school calendar for next school year is included in this message. A final calendar will be released at the end of the school closure.

4/6 Update

Although parent-teacher conferences are cancelled for this week, teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators will be happy to answer questions or address concerns with parents through an email, phone or video conference.

Good Friday, April 10 begins Easter Break. Students and parents can expect a significant reduction in communication from teachers, assignments, and assessments.

Please submit your Ed Choice applications or renewal forms, utility bill with the same service and billing address, and the student’s birth certificate to dviglio@youngstowndiocese.org. If you are applying for Ed Choice Expansion or Ed Choice low income, you should also submit the income verification form. The due date for both Ed Choice programs is Aoril 27.

The Ursuline Financial Aid application and FACTS online application are due April 24.

4/20 Update
Beginning Monday, online instruction returns.

Monday Mass with Fr. Murphy begins at 10:00 am tomorrow on the Ursuline Irish Facebook page.

Many families have asked about the remainder of the school year. Ursuline, of course, will continue to follow the governor’s orders. As of today, we are scheduled to go back to school on Monday, May 4. As soon as I know anything different, the school will pass on the information.

Thank you to the families who completed our online learning survey. Overall, we received positive reviews of the efforts made by our teachers. We also received several helpful suggestions that we are working to implement. Mr. Sammartino commends our teachers on making a quick transition to digital learning and their diligent work to achieve their instructional objectives.

Although the administration is working on graduation ceremony plans, no formal announcement will be made until we know whether we will return to school this academic year. It is our intention to do our very best to honor our seniors, while continuing to follow the safety and health standards from the state.

4/23 Update

The main office will be open Thursday, April 23, from 9:30 until 12:30 to allow parents to drop off financial aid or Ed Choice applications.

Traditional Ed Choice applications should also include a copy of a current utility bill with the same billing and service address and the student’s birth certificate. Ed Choice Expansion Scholarship applications should include the above items, and parents also need to submit an income verification form to the Ed Choice office. Applications and income verification forms can be found on the Ohio Department of Education website, http://education.ohio.gov/…/Sc…/EdChoice-Scholarship-Program

Families who have recently experienced a decrease in income, can now apply for the Ed Choice Expansion Scholarship. Parents would need to complete an application and submit a birth certificate and utility bill. Parents also would submit the income verification form with a letter from their employer indicating the date of job loss. There will also need to be documentation of current income, including unemployment compensation. The deadline for Ed Choice has been extended until late May, but there is a limited number of scholarships available this year. Get your application in as soon as possible.

With the closing of school for the remainder of the school year, summer school also is cancelled. The administration is finalizing details for an online alternative for summer school courses in physical education, American Government, and art. Information will be mailed home early next week with all of the details for online courses. Families who have already paid for summer school, but do not want to participate in the online alternative will receive a tuition credit for the upcoming school year, unless a refund check is requested.

Lunch accounts balances will carry over to the next school year. Those accounts in arrears are expected to be paid by the end of the school year.

4/26 Update

Survey Follow Up Information:
Many parents suggested we take steps to provide more consistency in the posting of assignments and due dates. Beginning Monday, teachers will post assignments, quizzes, videos, etc. at 8:00 a.m. each morning. All assignments will be due at 10:00 p.m. on the assigned due date. Not all days will have an assignment due from each teacher.
We believe this will allow students to log in to Google Classroom in the morning or whenever they get up and see all of their assignments for the day. Teachers also will post all assignments to the Google Calendar associated with their Google Classroom page and enter the assignment on PowerSchool with the due date. Students can easily see the assignments, projects, essays, etc. that are due for each day.

Teachers also will be making an effort to utilize Zoom more frequently, as well as provide lessons using Screencast-O-Matic or Screencastify. Many teachers have been using these tools since the beginning of remote learning, while others are learning to use these tools.

Summer School:
Updated information and registration forms for online summer school were mailed home Friday. Registration is due May 11. Please call or email with any questions.

Graduation Ceremonies:
The administration is finalizing plans for senior graduation ceremonies this week and expect to make an announcement by Friday.

5/3 Update

As we approach the end of the school year, preparations are underway for students to safely complete the traditional end-of-year responsibilities. The following tasks will be accomplished on June 2, 3, or 4, 2020 from 9:00am- 3:00pm. No appointments will be held from 11:30am-12:30pm.

Pick up awards from the annual Awards Day Ceremony

Students are asked to enter the building using the 10 North entrance. Students must wear a mask or face cover in the building. Only the student may enter the building. We ask that drivers who are not students wait in the car. Students will return school issued materials to the proper classroom. Chromebooks (in their school issued case) and the charger are to be returned to the Main Office and locks to the library. Once all items have been dropped off, students may empty the personal items from their locker and, if applicable, stop by the classrooms of their honors / AP courses for next year to pick up the summer assignment(s). Students are also asked to stop by the Main Office to receive their awards from the Awards Day Ceremony. We invite you to watch the ceremony on Facebook, YouTube, and our website beginning on May 21 at 8am. The Bookkeeping Office will be open during book collection. Students may also pay tuition or fees during their scheduled time period if needed.

5/10 Update

Cap & Gown Pick Up
Attention Seniors- You may pick up your cap and gown tomorrow, Monday, May 11, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm in the auditorium. You will not be admitted to the auditorium without a mask.

Student Council Elections
Student Council Elections for all grades will be delayed until the fall.

National Honor Society Induction
The NHS Induction Ceremony also will be delayed until the fall, most likely November. Congratulations to all of the juniors who were accepted to the Ursuline chapter of the National Honor Society.

Summer School 2020
