Class of 2024 Graduation - Ursuline High School

Ursuline High School’s 116th Commencement was held Sunday, May 26 at Stambaugh Auditorium at 1:00 p.m.  The speaker was Sr. Darla  Vogelsang ‘60 O.S.U. in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Mrs. Jennifer Fischer, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Diocese of Youngstown, was a special guest and Mr. Matthew Sammartino, Principal, awarded diplomas to the 115 graduates.  

Academic Excellence Awards were presented to the top graduates of the Ursuline Class of 2024.  Jenna Smith is the Valedictorian with a grade point average of 4.59 on a 4.0 scale.  Joseph Groner was honored as the Salutatorian with a grade point average of 4.54 on a 4.0 scale.

Jenna, the daughter of Mr. Greg and Dr. Wendy Smith, is a graduate of Saint Charles School and is a member of the parish.  She is a four year member of the cheerleading squad and volleyball team.  Her other accolades include the National Honor Society, Students of Stewardship, Global Rovers, Student Ambassadors, the Merici Med Prep Program, and the Spanish Club where she has served as president.  Jenna, a four star thespian, also has been active in the theatre program, has held several lead roles and the title of Dance Captain.  Jenna is also a dancer at Jamie’s Dance Force where she earned the Excellence Scholarship.  She is  a veterinary assistant at Crago Veterinary Center and a Camp Fitch Counselor.  Jenna has earned several academic awards, including Top 10 Student and The Higgins Hussman Award.  Jenna plans to study Biology at The Ohio State University with intentions of becoming a pediatrician.

Joseph (Joey) Groner is the son of Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Leanne Groner.  He is a also a graduate of Saint Charles School and a member of the Parish.  Joey’s older brother, Tommy, is a 2023 Ursuline graduate.  Joey has been a dedicated leader in the Track and Cross Country programs during his time at Ursuline and is a member of the National Honor Society.  He is a member the French Club, Global Rovers, and the Merici Med Prep Program, and volunteers as a Camp Fitch Counselor.  Joey is a Top 10 Student and a recipient of The Higgins Hussman Award.  He also earned the Governor’s Merit Scholarship.  Joey plans to study Biochemical Engineering at Bowling Green State University.

The Senior Awards Assembly was held on Thursday, May 23 beginning at 8:00 a.m.  The Baccalaureate Liturgy was celebrated at Saint Columba Cathedral on Friday, May 24 at 6:20 p.m.  Bishop Bonnar, celebrant for the Baccalaureate, was joined by Ursuline President, Father Murphy, Ursuline Chaplain, Father Johnson, Deacons Bancroft and Hancock, relatives of the graduates, and the pastors of the senior class members.  Following the Baccalaureate Liturgy, the graduates were guests of the faculty and administration at the annual Senior Dinner Dance held at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Hall.  Please join us in prayer for the Class of 2024 as they begin the next chapter in their exciting, young lives.
