Ursuline High School will graduate the Class of 2018 at its 110 th Annual Commencement Exercises held at Stambaugh Auditorium on Sunday, May 27, at 1:00 P.M. The speaker will be Patricia Fleming. Ms. Fleming is a life-long Catholic School Educator. She served Ursuline as Assistant Principal from 1983 -1995 and as
Principal from 1995 until her retirement in 2015. Ms. Mary Fiala, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Youngstown, will be a special guest. Mr. Matthew Sammartino, Principal, will award diplomas to the graduates. The Ursuline Administrative Team: Rev. Richard Murphy (President), Mrs. Michelle Carosella,
(Assistant Principal) and Miss Margaret Matune (Assistant Principal) will each have a role in the ceremony.
Academic Excellence Awards will be presented to the top graduates of the Ursuline Class of 2018. Richard Weitzel and Katharine Repetski are the Co-
Valedictorians with grade point averages of 4.58 on a 4.0 scale. Sophie Alper and Sarah Skiver will be honored as the Co-Salutatorians with grade point averages of 4.44 on a 4.0 scale.
Ricky Weitzel is the son of Dr. Richard and Eve Weitzel. He is graduate of Saint Rose School (Girard) and a member of the parish. He will attend Columbia University with an intended major of Biology (Pre-Med). During his high school career, Ricky was four-year member of the football team and a three-year letter winner. He was Class President and a member of the National Honor Society, Students of Stewardship, Spanish Club, Interact Club and served as a Student Ambassador. Ricky was a National Merit Commended Scholar and represented Ursuline at Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley and at the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference. He shadowed a physician weekly at Saint Joseph Hospital in Warren. He was the recipient of the Father Michael Chonko-Dr. Janet DelBene Chemistry Award.
Katharine Repetski is the daughter of Denise Walters Dobson and Michael J. Repetski. She attended Saint Rose School and is a member of the Saint Columba
Cathedral Parish. Katharine will attend Youngstown State University, Honors College and will major in Biology and Criminal Justice. At Ursuline, she was a member of the Marching and Concert Bands lettering all four years. She served as Woodwind Captain her senior year. Katharine was a member of the soccer team, lettering twice. She was a Student Ambassador, member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and Students of Stewardship. She served as Captain of the Ocean Bowl Team which earned a third place finish – the best in school history. She is a Eucharistic Minister and Altar Server and was a delegate to Youth Leadership Mahoning Valley. Katharine is nationally ranked in karate holding a Third Degree Black Belt and First Degree Black Belt in Chinese Kenpo.
Sophie Alper is the daughter of Marina and Gregory Alper. She attended the Akiva Academy and is a member of Temple El Emeth. She will attend the University of
Toledo and major in Mechanical Engineering. While at Ursuline, Sophie was a member of the varsity soccer team, marching and concert bands, French Club, Art Club and the National Honor Society. She is a member of BBYO (Jewish Youth Organization) and serves as President. Sophie is Secretary of MSJS (Jewish Sunday School). She also leads services at Temple on Saturdays. She is the recipient of the Holocaust Poetry Award from the Jewish Community Relations Council Board.
Sarah Skiver is the daughter of Karen and Larry Skiver. She is a graduate of Saint Rose School and a member of the parish. She will attend the University of Akron, Honors College majoring in Chemical Engineering. During her high school career, Sarah was very active in Theater serving as a board member and the International Thespian Society. She was a state qualifier in Speech and Debate. She was a varsity cheerleader, a member of El Fuego, the Marching and Concert Bands, National Honor Society and a Student Ambassador. She was a two-year Camp Fitch Counselor for Saint Rose School. Sarah was a also a two-time Congressional Art Show Finalist.
The Awards Assembly will be held on Thursday, May 24 th beginning at 8:00 AM. Members of the Class of 2018 will be formally presented to the Principal, faculty, and student body at this assembly. Students in grades 9 through 11 will be recognized at the Awards Assembly for their academic achievements and service to the school. All parents are cordially invited to attend. A special reception in honor of the parents of the graduating seniors will be held immediately following the ceremony in the cafeteria. The Baccalaureate Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Columba Cathedral on Friday, May 25 th at 6:30 PM. Rev. Richard Murphy, President of Ursuline, will be the celebrant joined by pastors of area Catholic parishes.
Following the Baccalaureate Liturgy, the graduates will be guests of the faculty and administration at the annual Senior Dinner Dance to be held at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center from 8:00 PM until 11:00 PM.
