OLD TESTAMENT GRADE 9 REQUIRED 1/2 credit This freshman scripture course focuses on the history and religious writings of the Jewish people from Abraham to Jesus. Students will come to understand the Old Testament as the basis of the faith of Christianity. Emphasis will be placed on the Creation story, the Exodus and Covenant events, the writings of the Prophets, and the prayers and reflections found in the Psalms.

NEW TESTAMENT GRADE 10 REQUIRED 1/2 credit This sophomore level scripture course focuses on the ministry, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus as found in the Gospels. The students will study the formation of the early Church with an emphasis on the life of Peter and Paul as found in the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles. Personal faith development will be encouraged and challenged through application of Scripture themes to daily life issues. MORALITY GRADE 10 REQUIRED 1/2 credit Moral development is the main emphasis of this sophomore requirement. Students will study Catholic moral principles and values, conscience formation, the meaning of integrity, the importance of applying moral principles to decision making, the call to live responsibly, and the freedom that results from living a Gospel-based life. Students will also learn to apply these principles to individual issues and moral dilemmas from a Catholic perspective.

SOCIAL AWARENESS GRADE 11 REQUIRED 1/2 credit This course provides juniors the opportunity to examine social issues such as capital punishment, hunger, homelessness, prejudice, and violence from a Catholic perspective through an examination of the Church's social justice documents. Students will grow to understand the Church's "preferential option for the poor" as Christ's mandate for the people of God. ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH HISTORY GRADE 11 REQUIRED 1/2 credit This course will highlight the main events and key figures which have been essential to the 2,000-year old story of Christianity. Within the context of the chronological history of Roman Catholicism, the use of art, architecture, music, and primary source material for each period will enhance student learning. Topics covered include the major Church Councils, the East-West Schism, the Protestant Reformation, the founding of Religious Orders, and the Church in the United States. Students will be encouraged to understand and appreciate their role within the global and local Church. EDUCATION IN FAITH (GOOD NEWS) GRADE 11 ELECTIVE 1 credit For this junior elective students plan and execute the weekend Religious Education Program for children with developmental difficulties and special needs. Students will learn the basics of contemporary catechesis with particular attention given to lesson planning, classroom management techniques, learning theory, methodology, and teaching skills. This program meets on Saturday mornings throughout the year. THIS COURSE FULFILLS THE JUNIOR RELIGION REQUIREMENT. The major themes of the Lifestyles course will be incorporated into the second semester syllabus. EDUCATION IN-FAITH (TEACHING CCD) GRADE 11 ELECTIVE 1 credit This elective course is conducted simultaneously with Education in Faith (Good News). Students enrolled in this class will serve in parish religious education programs for children. Students will learn the basics of contemporary catechesis with particular attention given to lesson planning, classroom management techniques, learning theory, methodology, and teaching skills. Participation in this program requires the commitment to teach in a parish CCD program. THIS COURSE FULFILLS THE JUNIOR RELIGION REQUIREMENT. The major themes of the Lifestyles course will be incorporated into the second semester syllabus.

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES GRADE 12 REQUIRED 1/2 credit In this course, seniors will focus attention on issues surrounding evolution and creationism with an in-depth study of Genesis 1 - 11. Modem social issues such as alcohol and drug addiction, human sexuality, bioethics, and the Catholic response to death and dying will be researched and discussed. Emphasis will be given to ethical decisions resulting from modem medical technology and life-sustaining treatments. A reading of the Book of Job and the Book of Revelation will focus on Christian hopefulness as the faith response of the Catholic community to these important modem issues. WORLD RELIGIONS GRADE 12 REQUIRED 1/2 credit This course for seniors encourages tolerance and understanding of diverse religious beliefs and practices, a necessity considering our diverse culture and the impact of living in a global society. Study will focus on Primal Traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shintoism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Islam, and modem religious movements. The study of Christianity will focus on Roman Catholic Church History and preparation for the ACRE assessment. CHRISTIAN SERVICE GRADE 12 ELECTIVE 1 credit Christian Service is an elective for seniors who have been accepted through an application process. Students research community service locations, develop a personal schedule, and serve at four different locations weekly for the remainder of the semester. In order to integrate these experiences, reflection papers, journals and projects will be assigned. Each Friday, students participate in seminar activities that focus on the relationship between the students' service and Jesus' call for love and compassion for all. THIS COURSE FULFILLS THE SENIOR RELIGION REQUIREMENT. PLEASE NOTE: Service meets for TWO PERIODS for one semester. HONORS RELIGION GRADE 12 ELECTIVE 1 credit Honors Religion 12 engages students in an in-depth exploration of selected topics of the Catholic faith. By studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, selected Church documents, major writings of Pope John II and other resources, students will develop a deeper understanding of and application for the richness of Catholic teaching and Tradition. This study will enable students to apply the Catholic perspective to contemporary issues. Among the topics to be explored are: Liturgy and Sacraments; Catholic Spirituality; Foundations of Moral Theology; Faith, Creed and Divine Revelation; the Call to Holiness: and the Discernment of Life Vocations. As this is an Honors level course, students will be awarded an extra quality point.
