FRENCH I            GRADES 9 - 11            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     French I emphasizes pronunciation and vocabulary. It presents the fundamentals of basic French grammar and seeks to lay the foundation for the acquisition of conversational competence. It includes some writing and cultural material. The language lab is used to improve pronunciation and comprehension.
PLEASE NOTE: French is an accelerated program.
PREREQUlSI1E: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT STUDENTS SCORE IN THE 40TH PERCENTILE OR BETTER ON THE LANGUAGE SECTION OF THE 9TH GRADE PLACEMENT TEST.

 

FRENCH II            GRADES 10 - 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     French II continues the oral-aural approach of French I but places increased emphasis upon reading, writing and grammar. Cultural material is integrated with language study. The language lab is used to improve pronunciation and comprehension.

FRENCH III    HONORS GRADES 11-12       ELECTIVE    1 credit
      French III is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the elements of the French language, highlights the culture of France, sets a standard for students in the writing of guided compositions, and aids in the acquisition of fluent communication skills. 
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN FRENCH II

 

FRENCH IV      ADVANCED PLACEMENT  GRADE 12 ELECTIVE   1 credit
      This course is designed to increase proficiency in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing and to familiarize students with well-known French writers from the 15th century to the present time and artists from the 18th century to the present. A considerable control over basic vocabulary and usage of idioms by means of outside reading is also an important aim at this level. This course will also prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Test in French Language and Literature.

ITALIAN I            GRADES 9 - 11            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     Basic conversational phrases and vocabulary are used as an introduction to Italian I. Computer programs that reinforce/enhance the instructional time will also be utilized, while emphasis on the oral-aural and cultural aspects of the language will occur via the study of Italian customs and folklore.
PREREQUISITE: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT STUDENTS SCORE IN THE 40th PERCENTILE OR BETTER ON THE LANGUAGE SECTION OF THE PLACEMENT TEST

 

ITALIAN II            GRADES 10 - 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     Students will become more proficient in the concepts developed in level one. Students will continue to develop language skills via impromptu conversation, dictation and grammar. An emphasis will be placed on more in-depth grammatical, oral-aural and cultural aspects of the language.
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN ITALIAN I

 

ITALIAN III            GRADES 11- 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     Italian III students will continue to develop communication skills via an oral-aural approach. More emphasis will be placed on translating, writing and reading in the target language. Introduced will be Inferno, the first part of La Divina Commedia by Dante, along with various projects and cultural labs. 
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN ITALIAN II

 

ITALIAN IV            GRADE 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     The study of Dante continues with the Purgatorio and Paradiso, the second and third books of La Divina Commedia. Students will teach a segment on various aspects of the Italian culture and language, and will lead daily discussions in Italian, thus enhancing their knowledge of Italian grammar and vocabulary.

SPANISH I            GRADES 9 - 11            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     Spanish I presents the principles of grammar through oral and written exercises and the reading of simple prose. Oral-aural communication facility is stressed. Cultural elements are discussed and the language lab is used to improve pronunciation.
PREREQUISITE: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT STUDENTS SCORE IN THE 40TH PERCENTILE OR BETTER ON THE LANGUAGE SECTION OF THE PLACEMENT TEST

 

SPANISH II            GRADES 9 - 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
Spanish II reviews the grammar learned in Spanish I and continues the development of basic grammar and vocabulary with emphasis on the ability to use the language. The ability to read and write in Spanish is emphasized. The study of basic grammar and vocabulary acquisition continues.
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN SPANISH I

 

SPANISH III            GRADES 10 - 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
     Spanish III presents more intricate grammar rules, enhanced vocabulary, and Spanish idioms. Students will continue to become more fluent in reading and writing Spanish. Oral communication in Spanish will increase. Students will also read some Spanish works of literature.
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN SPANISH II

 

SPANISH III            HONORS  GRADES 11 - 12 ELECTIVE  1 credit
     Advanced Placement Spanish III stresses implementation of reading, writing, speaking and listening of grammar, vocabulary and idioms previously learned while introducing the finer points of grammatical topics. The class will be conducted primarily in Spanish and students will be expected to speak Spanish on a daily basis. Meso-American Indian culture is the emphasis for special projects, and Mexican legends are the focus of cultural reading.
PREREQUISITE: "B" OR BETTER IN ADVANCED SPANISH II AND TEACHER APPROVAL

 

SPANISH IV            GRADES 11 - 12            ELECTIVE      1 credit
      Spanish IV places major emphasis on the students' ability to communicate in Spanish: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The readings consist of short stories, poetry, essays and articles. Written work is in both Spanish and English. Cultural differences are discussed and a variety of projects are required. A one-week Spanish culinary unit is also included.
PREREQUISITE: "C" OR BETTER IN SPANISH III

  

SPANISH IV            ADVANCED PLACEMENT      GRADE 12
 
    Advanced Placement Spanish IV has the following objectives: the ability to comprehend spoken Spanish; the ability to write expository passages; the ability to express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency; the acquisition of advanced vocabulary and a grasp of syntactical structure to fully comprehend written Spanish. The course seeks to develop language skills that are useful in themselves and that can be applied to other activities and disciplines. Extensive training in the organizing and writing of compositions in Spanish will be an integral part of the course. 
PREREQUISITE: "B" or BETTER IN AP SPANISH III and TEACHER APPROVAL
